Moritz Seider's seven-year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings, valued at $8.55 million annually, highlights his importance to the team and his dedication to growth.
Speaking after practice, the 23-year-old defenseman expressed gratitude for the opportunity to stay in Detroit long-term.
«I've always said I've wanted to be a Red Wing,» Seider said.
He emphasized his desire to prove doubters wrong, both from his 2019 draft selection and now with his new contract.
Seider has been a steady presence for Detroit since his NHL debut in 2021-22, amassing 134 points (21 goals, 113 assists) across 246 games. Despite his success, Seider remains focused on improvement, particularly in becoming more consistent and contributing on both ends of the ice.
«I'm going to try to eliminate off-nights as much as possible and contribute on special teams,» he said.
Head coach Derek Lalonde also sees room for Seider to grow, particularly in his defensive consistency and skating.
«His defensive game can continue to grow,» Lalonde noted, adding that Seider has the potential to improve even further, which is exciting for the team's future.
Seider's extension follows Lucas Raymond's recent eight-year deal, a development that Seider is thrilled about. The two young stars have been on a similar path since joining the NHL, and Seider said their shared journey has brought them closer.
«He's a really good friend, and I'm very, very happy for him,» Seider shared.
After falling short of the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, Seider is eager to help Detroit bounce back.
«Ending the season on a big low was fuel for this year,» he said, emphasizing the team's determination to improve and make a strong push for the playoffs.
