Chris Chelios throws the Detroit Red Wings under the bus in latest statement
The Chicago Blackhawks made the inevitable decision to send their legendary defenseman Chris Chelios to the Detroit Red Wings in 1999, and he cringed the first time putting on the jersey.
The
Detroit Red Wings made a huge trade with the Chicago Blackhawks on May 23rd, 1999.
The deal would send
Chelios to Detroit in return for Anders Eriksson, a 1st-round pick in 1999 that became Steve McCarthy, and a 2001 1st-round pick that became Adam Munro.
Two players who we've heard little of after the Hawks moved Chelios who won three Stanley Cups, 3 Norris Trophies, and was a 7X all-star.
Seems to be a bad move right?
It feels like Chelios knew at the time it might not have been the best decision.
The first time he put on the Red Wings jersey he'd look at himself in the bathroom, he walked out dejected.
He'd play another ten years in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, and win two of his three Stanley Cups wearing the winged wheel.
Fans responded to Chelios' comments, and were not too happy.
The first was in 2001-2002, and in 2007-2008.
Was the Red Wings jersey really cringeworthy? Of course, the original six teams are long-time rivals, so a reaction like that is to be expected.
However, he'd lead a successful second half of his career spending a decade in Detroit and winning two Stanley Cups.
Chelios was a part of the same Red Wings team that featured legends like Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, and Pavel Datsyuk.
Who can cringe at that lineup?
He'd retire from the NHL after the 2009-2010 season with a stint in Atlanta, but his contribution to the game of hockey cannot be measured and continues to this day as an analyst for TNT.
