Detroit Red Wings acquire 4x Stanley Cup Champion from the Chicago Blackhawks today in history
The Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings combined for a trade today in NHL history that sent Gus Mortson to Hockeytown in exchange; the Blackhawks received future considerations.
We all know what you're thinking: "Mr. Future Considerations" was busy back then, too. It appears that he will never leave the history books when it comes to trades across all eras of the NHL.
This time, the Detroit Red Wings would utilize their leverage and "future considerations" as they would acquire 4-time Stanley Cup champion Gus Mortson.
Being the focal point of this trade, Mortson won all of his hardware with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL (1946-47, 1947-48, 1948-49, and 1950-51). For the left-shot defenseman, he'd never have to worry about the 1967 curse.
By that time in his career, he'd have served his time in Detroit, playing one season in the winged wheel (1958-59). He'd suit up for 36 games in Hockeytown and score 1 point (1A) and 22 PIMs.
Mortson would never reach his former glory in a Maple Leafs uniform again and would conclude his professional hockey career in the OHA Sr. league, suiting up for the Oakville Oaks.
Information for that year is currently unavailable.
Gus Mortson's Fall from Glory and Connection to Ted Lindsay
The reason for his lack of NHL statistics after the 1958-59 season? Punishment by the NHL ownership for working with his players to form the NHLPA.
Near the end of his Chicago tenure in 1957, Mortson became involved in the aborted formation of a players association with Ted Lindsay, Doug Harvey, and others.
It goes to show that standing up for yourself sometimes really is frowned upon and can get you traded.
The defenseman was a former 4x Stanley Cup champion and wouldn't see the NHL again after his tenure in Detroit.
