Detroit Red Wings acquire 6 foot 7 defenseman: A major development and a proposals on the table

The Detroit Red Wings need to add some size to their blueline, as you can see, the current construction of the roster isn't good enough to take them to the playoffs.

They need to add some sandpaper, and that could come from the Western Conference in the Seattle Kraken's Jamie Oleksiak.

Oleksiak is a 6'7" defenseman who has been a stalwart in the Kraken's lineup since his arrival.

This season, he finished the year with 17 points (4-13, 34 PIMs, and 74 hits, a year removed from his 110-hit season in 2023-24. A physical defenseman is exactly what the Red Wings need in order to push themselves into playoff contention.

In order to acquire him, the Red Wings won't have to give up much for the left-handed defenseman:

The trade would solve issues on the Red Wings' blueline and add depth to the Kraken's prospect pool as they continue to get younger.

Oleskiak could be a rental for a Red Wings team that is desperate to get a taste of the postseason. As a member of the Kraken, Oleskiak has seen his fair share of playoff action in recent years.

In 2023, he and the Kraken made it to the Western Conference Semifinals and lost to the Dallas Stars 4-3.

He currently makes $4.6 million, and his contract will expire at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Oleskiak led the Kraken in blocked shots, and he will add size and ferocity to the lineup that's been missing.

While the Red Wings may have to sacrifice 36th overall pick Shai Buium, who scored 25 points in 67 games, the Wings' prospect pool is deep enough to recover from such a move.

If the Wings are truly in the playoff hunt, they'll have to dig deep to build the right team, including giving up futures.
