In an intriguing trade proposal by Heavy.com, the Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman could acquire 60+ point forward Bryan Rust from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Detroit Red Wings look to take the next step in the 2025-26 season.
After a disappointing 39-38-5 record in the NHL last year, they need a top-six forward to bolster the offense. With hopes of attaining a playoff spot, Yzerman will have to get serious about what kind of forward is needed in the lineup.
But they're still missing a key component in the lineup: a goal-scoring forward.
Heavy.com has proposed an intriguing proposal that would add Penguins forward Bryan Rust to the lineup for a draft pick, Michael Rasmussen, and Amadeus Lombardi.

What Could Bryan Rust Add to the Lineup?

With the Penguins rebuilding, they will look to offload veteran contracts in return for assets and prospects. The Penguins could acquire depth forward Michael Rasmussen, a former 1st-round pick, center Amadeus Lombardi, and a 1st-round pick in 2026.
The Red Wings would acquire a 65-point forward who has an affordable contract. His skills will help with the hunt for the playoffs next season.
«Rust has three years left on his contract and his full no-movement clause expired at the end of June 30, leaving him without any no-trade protection,» The Fourth Period reported. «There is already plenty of interest out there and with Pittsburgh in sell mode, he could be had but will command a high package if the Penguins part with him.»

Rust was featured on The Fourth Period's Summer Trade Watch List in 2025, and was 5th on the list.
Bringing him to Detroit would add the firepower missing, along with another goal-scoring option in the lineup.
