Red Wings legend Sergei Fedorov arrives in Detroit and delivers a pleasant surprise
During an interview with the media, Sergei Fedorov addressed the topic of his jersey retirement, as owner Chris Illitch reached out to the Hall of Famer in what was a pleasant surprise for the retired forward.
Former CSKA Moscow coach and Detroit
Red Wings legend Sergei Fedorov received a call from Chris Illitch recently.
The former Stanley Cup champion wasn't sure what the conversation was about as Illitch kept the discussion originally focused on family matters.
But as the conversation evolved, Illitch would bring up a topic near and dear to Fedorov, which was that the team was planning
Fedorov's jersey retirement.
A moment that would literally take his breath away for a moment.
Sergei Fedorov's #91 To Be Retired in January by the Detroit Red Wings
The three-time Stanley Cup champion will have his jersey retired on January 12th, in a home game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
He'll return to home ice and be honored for his contribution to the success and legacy of the Red Wings.
it was, again I'm going to use this word, overwhelming. Memories, feelings, everything that happened just click. I tried to gather my thoughts together and thank him for the tremendous honor and a little bit in disbelief that that kind of thing happened to the Russian kid who came to North America when he was 20.
Fedorov is considered one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL, and he has the statistics to show for it: 1,248 games played, 1,179 points (483-696), and three Stanley Cups.
Now he'll have a jersey retirement to add to his legacy as a Hall of Famer in the NHL.
This adds to the special events that the team has planned in advance, while the Centennial Season for the Red Wings progresses.
The team is 9-6-0 in the Atlantic Division, which is good enough for 2nd in the division, and is poised for a bigger piece of the pie in 2025-26.
