A player drafted by Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings in New Jersey is emerging as their future star between the pipes.
The Detroit Red Wings made a massive acquisition during the offseason when they completed a trade with the Anaheim Ducks involving John Gibson.
With Cam Talbot currently competing in the final year of his contract at 38 years old, it's safe to say that there are doubts about his future in Detroit, as well as the NHL altogether.
If Talbot ends up leaving the organization, the team can count on a lot of depth in their goalie prospect pool.
Sebastian Cossa is currently performing well with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL, but their best prospect at that position is definitely Trey Augustine.

The Red Wings' second-round pick in 2023, Trey Augustine, is considered among the best American goaltenders currently not playing in the NHL.
In the past years, he won many notable awards, including two WJC gold medals with Team USA, and multiple NCAA honors, such as the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year.
Once again this season, Augustine's performances don't disappoint.
In seven games so far with Michigan State University, the goalie has six wins, a 1.41 GAA, and a .944 SV%.
Although he disappointed some fans when he announced he wouldn't make the jump to the pros this season, he is expected to make it after the season.
Considered by most as the Wings' future number-one goalie, there's a lot of hype surrounding his arrival in Detroit.
Knowing Steve Yzerman's careful approach with player development, it wouldn't be surprising to see Augustine play a season or two in the AHL before starting in the NHL.
However, his performances could convince management to give him a shot, especially if Cam Talbot isn't around the team anymore.
