Red Wings' Steve Yzerman was active during the NHL trade deadline, acquiring a valuable asset that many teams passed up on in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks

Fans may be disappointed in Steve Yzerman's trade deadline that only contained one trade made, but it was a very wise acquisition by Detroit.
The Red Wings did not want to sacrifice their future of the organization by giving top prospects away for short-term rentals.
Instead, Yzerman acquired well-known NHL veterans.

Red Wings trade deadline day summary

The Red Wings acquired a 900+ NHL game veteran in Blackhawks forward Craig Smith, who was a former Boston Bruin and Nashville Predators.
Detroit gave up 25-year old Joe Veleno, who had 10 points on the season for the Red Wings in 56-games played.
