Detroit Red Wings acquire longtime NHL defenseman in an unexpected trade proposal with the Utah Mammoth

The Detroit Red Wings are linked to defenseman Ian Cole, who could add some grit to the blue line if Steve Yzerman would be willing to trade youth forward Jonatan Berggren to the Utah Mammoth.
In an intriguing trade proposal we've seen on Heavy.com, an analyst has linked defenseman Ian Cole of the Utah Mammoth to the Detroit Red Wings.
Cole is a veteran defenseman who has plenty of playoff experience and sandpaper to add to a blue line that has been leaky as of late.

The swap sees the Mammoth send Ian Cole and a fourth-round pick to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Jonatan Berggren.
For the Detroit Red Wings, this could be a way of bolstering a faulty blue line while acquiring assets to trade with or draft with.
Of course, Berggren would be able to get a fresh start in the NHL with the Utah Mammoth, who are considered a bubble team at this point in their short existence.
The young Red Wings forward scored 24 points (12-12) in 75 games last season and hasn't been able to live up to the hype surrounding him.
Ian Cole would bring two Stanley Cups to his name and a multitude of playoff experiences in the league to the Red Wings.
Cole slotted in on the bottom pair last season in Utah but could offer some needed muscle on the blue line, as the team's current lineup doesn't have the kind of teeth needed to put a stop to teams on the rush.
The veteran defenseman's contract expires at the end of the season and pays him $2.8 million in average annual value.
