The Red Wings are set to part ways with forward Red Savage, who was taken in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, after not being able to sign him to an entry level contract.
There are a multitude of young NHL players who are set to become UFAs if their teams do not sign them to entry level contracts by later this afternoon, and it looks like Red Savage of the Detroit Red Wings is one of them.
Redmond "Red" Savage, who the Red Wings took with the 114th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, has yet to be signed to an entry level deal in Detroit and appears headed to the UFA market.
With a bit of space down low, Savage is a flashy, occasionally dynamic offensive creator. In transition, he manipulates defenders with hands and feet that transmit different information, eye deception, and nearly unmatched pace. Slip and hook passes, even when moving, and a desire to hunt the high-danger option makes him a set-up threat. And, he's a threat from mid-range with his mechanically-sound wrister shot.
Steve Yzerman spoke about potentially signing Red Savage
GM Steve Yzerman spoke briefly earlier in the summer about signing Savage to a contract, though it didn't sound like it was a concrete guarantee to happen.
His rights expire August 15. I think we've had some discussions. I haven't got an update on it, but potentially looking at Red remaining in the fold on some type of contract.
Savage can now become a UFA and sign with any NHL team that offers him a deal.
