NHL faces backlash after release of top 20 defenseman list: Several big names are missing
NHL Network is facing backlash from Red Wings fans after they didn't include Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson in their list of the 20 best defensemen in the NHL.
NHL Network is once again drawing the wrath of Red Wings fans after their latest list once again disrespected Detroit.
Just as their list earlier in the summer of the 20 best wingers did not include Lucas Raymond, their most recent list of the 20 best defensemen was missing both Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson.
But staff writer Tracey Myers disclosed shortly after that she was surprised Seider wasn't on the list, but that he should be on next year's edition.
"I'm surprised this defenseman didn't make the list this year, but there's no doubt Seider should be among the top 20 shortly. Seider transitioned beautifully from the European to North American game and won the Calder Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL's top rookie, in 2021-22. Since then he's just been steady......Oh, and speaking of steady, Seider has played every game of each season since debuting in the League. That's pretty impressive. The 24-year-old is building quite a reputation in the League and he's only going to get better as he continues."
Is the NHL disrespecting the Red Wings once again?
Moritz Seider was Steve Yzerman's 1st draft pick
The Red Wings took Seider with the 6th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, which was Steve Yzerman's 1st draft after replacing the maligned Ken Holland after his years of mismanagement.
While the pick was considered a long shot by many, Seider has proven that he was right to have been taken so early by Detroit by winning the Calder Trophy in 2022 as the NHL's best rookie.
