According to reports today, the Detroit Red Wings will take their prospects to Dallas this season, and compete against the Stars, instead of beginning the year in Traverse City for the traditional hockey tournament whose popularity has waned.

The Traverse City prospect tournament was an exciting competition for NHL fans who'd get to see their team's newest prospects play against each other before the season started.
The tournament began in 1998 and now, in 2025, has waned in popularity. At its height, it included eight different NHL teams competing. It'd decline to four, and then to two.
Centre I.C.E. Arena began hosting the NHL Prospects Tournament in 1998.

Now, instead of continuing a tradition that doesn't work, GM Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings are going mobile and taking their top prospects to Dallas to compete against the Dallas Stars' own prospects.
GM Steve Yzerman acknowledged the shift in the practice of NHL teams:
«Things are changing, evolving in the offseason, development camps, rookie tournaments,» Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said last year. «Teams are doing different things.»

Now the Red Wings prospects will have to travel to compete this season, in what is a haul from one side of the country to another.
The last time the two teams battled it out in Traverse City was in 2024, where the Red Wings prospects beat the Stars 2-0 to shut out the series.
Now, with a refreshed roster for each team, this should prove to be an exciting event.
But we have questions about where we'll be able to view the prospect tournament, given it won't be taking place in the Centre ICE arena?

Red Wings Prospects

In February 2025, the Red Wings' prospect pool was ranked 5th overall in the NHL by Scott Wheeler of The Athletic.
We hope we can see Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, and Nate Danielson hand out "L's" during the games against the Stars.
For now, we hold tight until we hear news of the schedule for the new tournament this year.
