Detroit Red Wings complete trade: Steve Yzerman confirms a major development's underway

While there were multiple high-profile free agents that were available on the open market, hardly any of them remained up for grabs for very long.
The Red Wings, who may have had aspirations of grabbing someone like Mitch Marner from the Toronto Maple Leafs or one of Sam Bennett or Aaron Ekblad from the divisional foe Florida Panthers, missed out on all of them.
Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman did make a number of signings, including James van Riemsdyk, who played last year with the Columbus Blue Jackets, and former MSU Spartan Mason Appleton, who has mostly played with the Winnipeg Jets.
But Yzerman explained that there still remains the possibility of executing a trade before the start of Training Camp in the fall to try and put the team in an even better position to compete for what would be their 1st postseason spot in 10 years.
What I intend to do is once things settle down here and we get through the holiday weekend, would be to circle back after next week with everyone to see what their plans are for the offseason. See if they have any holes to fill or players for whatever reason they want to move. So we'll see if anything comes up here in the next week or so.
A player with a local connection that the Red Wings have been connected to includes Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars, who are run by former Red Wings GM Jim Nill.
The Red Wings are entering their 100th season and don't want to miss the postseason, as their drought is now the longest in team history, even longer than the so-called "Dead Wings" of the 1970s era.
