The Detroit Red Wings were deemed as frontrunners to land a two-time Stanley Cup champion.
As the Pittsburgh Penguins prepare to shake things up, trade rumors surrounding veteran forward
Bryan Rust are heating up.
"The Red Wings are the top contenders to land Bryan Rust in a potential trade with Pittsburgh."
Rust, 33, is a proven winner with two Stanley Cups and a guy who's quietly been one of the Penguins' most reliable players for years. The Michigan native is coming off a career-high 65-point season, where he scored 31 goals and 34 assists.
In his career, the veteran forward took part in 638 regular-season games, in which he scored 203 goals and 234 assists. He also added 21 goals and 14 assists in 79 playoff games.
Red Wings Would Be Better With Rust On The Lineup
Adding a guy like Rust would give the Wings exactly what they've been missing: a scoring winger who could complete a line with
Dylan Larkin and
Lucas Raymond.
It also doesn't hurt that he grew up a Red Wings fan. A homecoming like this, especially during a pivotal time in Detroit's rebuild, would be a storyline too good to ignore.
Berggren, 25, has been involved in plenty of rumors over the past months. The forward tallied 24 points, including 12 goals, last season with the Red Wings.
If Steve Yzerman finds a way to land Rust, especially with the Penguins eating a bit of salary, it could be the move that finally gets Detroit back where they want to be.
