Chicago Blackhawks set to move on from former Detroit Red Wings forward

The Chicago Blackhawks are poised to move on from former Detroit Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou, who has spent the last 3 years with the organization.

Per BlackhawkUp, Chicago won't be re-signing him to a new deal for next year.

The Red Wings took Athanasiou with the 110th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, and he would play the 1st several years of his career within the organization; he began with the Grand Rapids Griffins before eventually making the jump to the NHL.

His 1st full year was 2016-17, which was Detroit's last year at Joe Louis Arena; he had 29 points (18G, 11A); his best output to date was when he scored 30 goals in 2018-19 for Detroit.

He was dealt from the Red Wings to the Edmonton Oilers on February 24, 2020 in the deal that brought veteran Sam Gagner to Detroit.

After a brief run with the Oilers, Athanasiou signed with the Los Angeles Kings and played for 2 years with the club before eventually signing with the Blackhawks in 2022.

He was then re-signed by the Blackhawks in 2023 on a 2-year contract with an AAV (average annual value) of 4,250,000.

This most recent year was a difficult one for Athanasiou, who only appeared in 28 games with the Blackhawks while also being waived and spending time in the American Hockey League for the 1st time since 2015-16.

He had 27 points (11G, 16A) in 30 games with the Rockford IceHogs before being re-called back to the Blackhawks.
