Red Wings prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is heading back overseas to play for the Norwegian squad in the IIHF World Championship after briefly playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Red Wings prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygard will once again be headed back overseas, and he'll play for the Norwegian squad in the ongoing IIHF World Championships that began on May 9.
Both he and fellow Red Wings prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka were brought over to North America to join the Grand Rapids Griffins, who were recently eliminated from the Calder Cup Playoffs by the Texas Stars.
Brandsegg-Nygard went pointless in the pair of games he skated in before the playoffs, but scored 3 points (2G, 1A) in 3 playoff games.
At 6'1 and 207 pounds, Brandsegg-Nygard filled a void when the Red Wings took him in the 1st round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft that GM Steve Yzerman
believed they were lacking.
A lot. Big, strong young man. Physically developed. Can really shoot the puck. Thought he was a really good two-way player. Kind of a goal-scoring winger that obviously fills a void in our prospect pool.
After Brandsegg-Nygard was selected, Red Wings assistant GM and Director of Amateur Scouting Kris Draper said he liked the Norwegian prospect's physical edge.
We want to have competitive hockey players that can think the game. We think he brings a physical presence.
Certainly doesn't back down of getting in the corners, getting in on the forecheck, finishing checks, gets around the hard areas.
Playing in 42 games with Skelleftea AIK, Brandsegg-Nygard had 11 points (5G, 6A), numbers that the organization would like to see improve with Grand Rapids next season.
