Detroit Red Wings goaltender hints at wanting out of the organization: Edmonton Oilers complete trade call
A Red Wings goaltender sounded like he knows his time in Detroit could be coming to an end in a new interview.
The Detroit Red Wings made a massive addition to their goalie department in the offseason by completing a trade with the Anaheim Ducks involving the veteran
John Gibson.
Following some tough seasons in Anaheim, Gibson appears ready to be a lock for the number one role in Detroit.
One of the goalies opened up on his situation in a way that leaves fans to believe he could seek opportunities in other organizations.
Sebastian Cossa Sounds Off On Future With The Wings After Tough First Preseason Game
Sebastian Cossa was in front of the Wings' net all night but only faced 17 shots.
He let two of those go behind the goal line, ending the night with a .882 SV%, which isn't near the NHL level, especially in such a one-way game.
The 22-year-old goalie shared his thoughts on his delicate position, his tough second half of last season, and the approach to the new season in an interview.
Here's what he had to say:
"I didn't have the best second half last year, I wasn't happy with the playoff performance. There's a bit of a chip on the shoulder when it comes to that. I want to prove I can play at a really high level in the AHL and hopefully get (an NHL opportunity).
I was rock solid the first half of the year up until around December, then a couple of injuries in Grand Rapids and Detroit, and you miss a couple of guys and we got into a bit of a slump, the whole team. I wasn't playing great. It's unfortunate.
It's a big year, but nothing really changes for me. I had a real good summer and put in a lot of work. I'm just trying to stay consistent through the year. I want to gain the experience I've gained the past few years and push the pace and be the best version of myself."
It would be surprising to see Cossa in the NHL this year, but he could be an interesting option to step in if injuries occur during the season.
Keep in mind, as
we've discussed before, the Oilers have indeed called Yzerman to ask about the availability of Cossa on the trade market.
"They're looking a little more long-term; they've got their field of vision a little bit wider," Robinson said of the Oilers' goalie search. "I was told that they have contacted Detroit. I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Augustine, and I think that was a non-starter.
They have a six-foot-six, six-foot-seven, former first-rounder in Sebastian Cossa sitting there."
