Detroit Red Wings legend Sergei Fedorov sends a large offer to the organization: He wants to return
After spending his last few years in the KHL with CSKA Moscow, it appears that former Detroit Red Wings legend Sergei Fedorov wouldn't rule out a return to the team.
The Detroit Red Wings are set to roll out the red carpet for Sergei Fedorov in January during the game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
They have planned a jersey retirement ceremony, and it could be seen as one step in mending the fences broken with the former Russian defector since 2002-03.
There was a contract dispute that saw him lose confidence in the organization, and despite a rich offer of $50 million from the Red Wings, he opted to head West and sign in Anaheim for $40 million.
However, with the latest ceremony, discussions are taking place about a return to the front office with the Red Wings. It sounds like Fedorov is open to discussing with GM Steve Yzerman.
«That's a fair thought. If Detroit's management wants me involved professionally, I'd be happy to do it. I'd gladly share my experience, mentor young players, and help raise the next generation of Red Wings champions.»
Sergei Fedorov is a legend in Red Wings history. A three-time Stanley Cup winner, Hart Trophy winner, and Selke Trophy winner, he's not light on hardware earned here.
But after all of this time, you'd like to think this would be a happy reunion between him and the team.
Which we would hope will happen.
Fedorov has spent the last few seasons coaching CSKA Moscow in the KHL.
What kind of impact could he have on the front office?
He played a total of 1,248 games in the NHL and scored 1,179 points (483-696).
