Detroit Red Wings reportedly using Sergei Fedorov's name to cover up a big controversy within the organization
A hockey insider accused the Detroit Red Wings organization of trying to distract fans away from a larger issue by retiring Sergei Fedorov's number.
It's no secret that the past several years haven't been easy on Detroit Red Wings fans.
After a rebuild that is taking much longer than most expected, the team has missed the playoffs for the past nine years, which will extend to 10 if the team doesn't qualify this year.
Now, a new report stated that the big news of the week in Detroit -
Sergei Fedorov's jersey retirement -is actually serving the Wings as a distraction from the state of the team.
An Insider Thinks The Wings Decided To Retire Sergei Fedorov's Jersey To Distract Fans
Keith Gave, sports writer and author of multiple books on hockey, wrote on X that in his opinion, the Wings decided to retire his jersey now, over 15 years after the player hung up his skates, as a distraction.
He added that he believes the Wings possibly want to get back on the fans' good side as sales are stalling and prices are going up.
In my opinion, the decision is about celebrating the franchise.
If retiring Fedorov's jersey is a move to please fans and sell tickets, then the whole Centennial season celebration could be seen like that.
However, most fans see the whole thing as a celebration of the franchise's rich history and are showing excitement about the event:
