Detroit Red Wings offseason signing of NHL veteran: "I take pride in my game"

Newest Red Wings signing, Mason Appleton, has spent the majority of his career with the Winnipeg Jets, now a fixture in Hockeytown; thanks to Steve Yzerman, he wants to help build an identity here.
The former Michigan State University forward has found a new home in Hockeytown.
Appleton has spent the majority of his NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets, and the Seattle Kraken has been known as a great depth option, playing on the penalty kill and adding secondary scoring.
He's shown he's capable of having an impact in the Red Wings lineup, scoring a short-handed goal against the Buffalo Sabres in Thursday's matchup in Little Caesars Arena. His goal was assisted by Andrew Copp, who stole the puck from Alexandar Georgiev.
Mason Appleton takes Pride in His Game, and the Red Wings Can Benefit From It
The Red Wings are going to benefit from Appleton, who, as a depth forward, can be used in special teams situations, like the penalty kill. His attention to detail is what helped the Winnipeg Jets make a run to the Western Semiconference Finals in 2024-25.
"Obviously, you try to play every game with that same mentality and mindset, but you realize that in the playoffs, everything is kind of under a microscope and every little play matters that much more," he said. "I try to show that in my game and take pride in the little things, and be really detailed and execute what the coach's game plan is."
The former Winnipeg Jets forward is poised to make the Red Wings a fierce and competitive team as he knows what it takes to set the tone, playing for a contender last season in the NHL.
