Detroit Red Wings on the verge of sending highly touted forward to a contending team
The Detroit Red Wings turned heads with their decision to draft Slovak forward Michal Svrcek in the 2025 NHL entry draft this past summer, and now a contending organization is on the verge of acquiring him.
Detroit wasn't the only city to draft the 18-year-old left winger this summer, as Windsor in the OHL selected him in their draft as well, but a change of plans is reportedly underway.
Svrcek was selected 199th overall by the Red Wings and also 53rd overall by the Spitfires in the CHL import draft.
With a few more seasons of development needed for the young forward to make the jump to the Red Wings organization, there's a clock ticking for Windsor to get Svrcek into their lineup for the upcoming season.
«He's a really good player. He skates exceptionally well, has excellent offensive instincts, and is always attacking with speed.
We hope to get a chance to bring Michal over.»
-Spitfires general manager Bill Bowler
The Red Wings draftee believes his transition to North American styled hockey would be very well.
«I like to play a fast game,» Svrcek said. «I try to play on the boards. That's kind of the North American game.
«Now, I'm going to decide what's best for me.»
Svrcek playing in Sweden with Brynas
Svrcek played for Brynas in Sweden last season, and currently believes that's where he'll end up playing in the coming year.
But there's a current roadblock in his transition to North America, and it's in the hands of Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings' front office.
«There's a rather complex process involved in the decision of Michal coming to the CHL this year or not,» said Allan Walsh, who is Svrcek's agent. «We're actively involved in the process with Michal and Detroit in figuring out where the best place is for him to play and working quickly to make a decision in collaboration with each other."
His agent Allan Walsh
also stated that the Spitfires are a prime destination, sending a clear hint to Steve Yzerman on what step to take next with his client.
«Michal is ecstatic to be drafted by Windsor, but there's a process we have to go through. Windsor, in our estimation, is one of the premier destinations for any import coming to the CHL.
«They do a great job in developing players and taking care of players and have a long tradition of winning. People in management, ownership, and amongst the coaching staff are among the highest quality of people you will know.»
In the coming weeks we will learn where Svrcek will lace them up, details to follow.
