Detroit Red Wings prospect aims to develop with Grand Rapids Griffins this year and the NHL next year
Shai Buium, the 21-year-old blueline prospect, is gearing up for his first full professional season after signing a three-year, entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings in April.
After a strong junior year at the University of Denver, where he posted career-highs in goals, assists, and points, Shai Buium got a brief taste of pro hockey with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins, playing one game on an amateur tryout.
Shai Buium's time at the University of Denver helped him develop significantly, particularly in his defensive game. He emphasized the importance of strong defence in generating offensive opportunities, a mindset that aligns with the modern defenseman's role in the NHL. His experience at the AHL level highlighted the faster pace and greater physicality of the professional game, lessons he's eager to apply as he transitions fully to the pros.
With the 2024-25 season approaching, Shai Buium is excited about the opportunity to further his development in the Grand Rapids Griffins. He's particularly enthusiastic about the coaching staff and the environment in Grand Rapids Griffins, feeling confident that it's the right place to build the foundation for his pro career.
