Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson had his true breakout year in the NHL and is looking for more in 2025-26.
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson just completed his 1st full year in the NHL, though he wasn't able to be considered a rookie because he'd already played a handful of games in each of the last 2 seasons.
But he immediately became a key part of the Detroit blue line, and has already been essentially declared the Red Wings' 2nd best defenseman by most fans and media behind Moritz Seider.
Edvinsson had a special message for Red Wings fans:
Thanks Detroit and the fans for the support this season! Very excited for the next one!
Not only did Edvinsson routinely play top-pairing minutes with the Red Wings this season, but he actually led the team with a positive plus-11 rating, the best on the roster.
A terrible stat in my opinion. But when you got dash-everything on your team and you look at two or three players that are on the plus side, (Edvinsson) has done something well on both sides of the bucket.
Edvinsson was invited by the Swedish national team to compete in the 2025 IIHF World Championships which begin May 9; he'll join fellow Swedish Red Wings teammate Lucas Raymond.
Sweden's head coach has also been open in his praise on the development of Edvinsson, whom he feels will be an effective NHL defenseman for years to come.
