Detroit Red Wings legend issues bold response to controversial NHL draft lottery

The Red Wings once again had nothing but bad luck in the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, and ex-Detroit forward Darren McCarty is weighing in.
They once again failed to move up, instead falling backward yet again when they landed the 13th overall pick despite being widely projected to pick 12th; there was only an 8.9% chance of that occurring.
Meanwhile, the New York Islanders landed the top pick by moving from their projected 10th spot to the 1st; they had less than a 5% chance of getting the top pick, which they ended up getting.
While it may not seem like much of a difference, it's just the latest example of the Red Wings falling backwards in the Draft Lottery.
Former 4x Stanley Cup champion Darren McCarty is just as bewildered as the rest of Red Wings fans everywhere:
We're really the only team that lost position again? We went from 12th to 13th? It is what it is, it's almost comical.
It makes you wonder...you had a shot to, what, move up to No. 2? But the fact that you moved down to 13? (laughs)
Perhaps the most egregious example of horrible luck in NHL Draft Lottery history occurred in 2020 when the Red Wings fell back to the 4th overall pick despite having the worst record in the NHL by a considerable margin.
In any of the 9 Draft Lotteries, the Red Wings haven't moved up a single position; they've instead fallen back a total of 8 spots.
