Dylan Larkin's patience with the Red Wings running out after another early off-season
Dylan Larkin's patience with the Detroit Red Wings could be running out after another early off-season.
The Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin took part in 734 NHL games over his career, all spent in Detroit, but only went to the playoffs once; playing five games in 2016, his first season in the League.
This was Larkin's 10th straight year of missing the playoffs. For a talented player like him, it's not surprising to learn that the years of defeat are starting to take a toll on the captain.
In his exit interview, he addressed the situation, saying he finds it hard to watch teams in the playoffs year after year while he must remain at home:
«I do really take this hard. It's difficult to sit up here again and we're not playing tomorrow and there's teams playing hockey tomorrow and you reassess, you evaluate yourself, you talk to the coaches, management, see what you have to work on."
He also talked about how he wants to win with the Red Wings, and how he knows he has a lot of work to do before it happens:
"I want to help this team get to the playoffs. Not just get to the playoffs but win the Stanley Cup. And we have a lot of work to do all over the board for us to become champions."
"You look at the schedule, it's a lot of travel, a lot of games, a lot of coming and going, flying in, flying out. It's difficult, but you have to come up with wins. And especially in March, it was hard that we didn't do anything."
Later, he talked about the trade deadline and how Steve Yzerman's inaction hurt the team morale:
"And then I felt the group kind of we didn't gain any momentum from the trade deadline, and guys were kind of down about it, so it'd be nice to add something and bring a little bit of a spark on the ice and maybe a morale boost as well."
"There were times I didn't feel good playing here and wasn't able to do some things that I wanted to, but I still went out there and tried my best. So, it is another disappointing year. I did play all 82 games, but I would have liked to be more effective in a lot of them."
He finished by talking about the team's situation, with new head coach Todd McLellan and how impressed he was by the young players this year:
"Todd is a really good coach and I've been very impressed with him. I think training camp with our group, our young guys and our core with him, it would be very valuable. I think Todd is going to really help to turn this thing around here."
"It's good to see and I was very impressed with a lot of the young guys."
Larkin's patience with the Red Wings could be running out, but ultimately, it would be surprising to see him leave the team he spent his whole career with so soon.
