NHL Insider Reveals The Player the Red Wings will Lose In July Free Agency

The Athletic's Max Bultman dropped a tiny nugget of knowledge regarding the Red Wings and goalie Alex Lyon, as GM Steve Yzerman and the team could let the backup walk in July.
The Detroit Red Wings will have $21 million in cap space to play with in free agency. With that kind of cap space, they can sign just about anyone they want, but as far as contract extensions go, we won't see one Red Wings player offered a new deal.
That player is backup goalie Alex Lyon.
Whom, according to Max Bultman, who covers the Red Wings for The Athletic, feels that the duo of Cam Talbot and Petr Mrazek, Alex Lyon is the odd man out.
«At this stage, I'd guess leaving. I don't think Lyon has ever gotten quite enough credit from the Red Wings,» Bultman wrote. «
With a more reliable duo in the net, Lyon could seek a backup job elsewhere in the NHL, where a team could utilize him as a third goalie.
Lyon will be a pending UFA at the end of the season, as his two-year, $1.8 million deal expires.
His record wasn't that great here in Detroit, with 14-91, 2.81 GAA, and a .896 save percentage.
Head Coach Todd McLellan felt that the team's goaltending wasn't as good as it should've been. Now, we may have our first casualty of free agency for the Red Wings as Lyon will have to sell himself somewhere else.
Max Bultman expanded on where he thinks Lyon will land:
«He's proven he's more than that in this league, and in a thin goalie market, I think he stands a good chance of getting a deal to be at least a tandem goalie somewhere else - and with a nice raise, too.»
While the playoffs haven't finished yet, GMs in teams who didn't make the postseason are formulating plans of attack for July.
And sometimes, that means cutting your losses.
Perhaps Lyon can find himself a new home in the NHL, maybe in Philadelphia?
