Ex-NHL player accuses Lucas Raymond of theatrics
Former NHL forward Sami Kapenen, who was beaten by the Red Wings in the 2002 Stanley Cup Final, is calling out current Detroit forward Lucas Raymond.
Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond decided to keep playing despite Detroit's year finishing without a playoff spot; he's suiting up for the Swedish squad in the
2025 IIHF World Championship.
But his play is drawing criticism from a former NHL player, known for having been beaten by the Red Wings in the 2002 Stanley Cup Final.
Former Carolina Hurricanes forward Sami Kapanen, who was working as a broadcaster for the game between Raymond's Swedes and the Finnish squad, accused Raymond of trying to embellish a call to draw a more severe penalty after being high-sticked by Finland's Walter Merela.
I have to say that Raymond worked hard to get that expulsion. He puts the towel in his mouth, under his lip and gets the blood out of there.
Word spread to Raymond rather quickly about Kapanen's comments, and he
responded in kind.
I don't know what to say. If it bleeds, it bleeds. I can't control what it looks like in my mouth after I get a lollipop (a cut in the mouth).
It feels pretty irrelevant, actually. It's okay. You get lollipops...a hit on the tooth. I started bleeding. Not the end of the world.
Kapanen and the Carolina Hurricanes were beaten in 5 games by the Red Wings in the 2002 Stanley Cup Final; he failed to score on a prime chance in overtime on Dominik Hasek in the iconic 3OT Game 3 in Raleigh.
Lucas Raymond reached a new career-best in points with 80 (27G, 53A) in all 82 games. He'll hope to help lead the Red Wings to their 1st playoff spot in 10 years next spring.
