Former Detroit Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi Lands Head Coaching Gig
Former Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders enforcer Todd Bertuzzi has begun a new career in the Great Ontario Junior B Hockey League, as he has taken on the Head Coaching role for the Cambridge RedHawks.
It was announced today that
Todd Bertuzzi was joining the Junior B Cambridge RedHawks as a Head Coach. He is the latest NHL enforcer to join the ranks of the coaching fraternity.
Instead of starting with a minor-league hockey squad, he's starting out in the GOJHL's RedHawks.
With this move, Bertuzzi has set himself up for a possible promotion to the
OHL if he does a good job in the GOJHL.
Bertuzzi will join the Cambridge RedHawks as a Head Coach in order to put them on a winning path. They finished last season with a record of 27-18-4-1 and lost to the Erie Meteors at the beginning of the postseason.
Bertuzzi is no stranger to the league as he himself started his journey to the NHL, playing for the Guelph Storm in the OHL. The Sudbury, Ontario native, now 50, played his last five seasons in the NHL wearing the iconic winged wheel.
During his best season in Detroit, he scored 44 points (18 goals, 26 assists) and would play as a Red Wing from 2009-2014.
He'd suit up for the Binghamton Senators in the AHL for 2 games before calling it a career.
Bertuzzi played a total of 1,159 NHL games during his career and scored a total of 770 points (314 goals, 456 assists).
His nephew, Tyler, currently plays for the Chicago Blackhawks, another original-six squad.
