Former Red Wings Prospect Applies for Citizenship in Russia, joins the KHL

Former Detroit Red Wings prospect Dmytro Timashov has given up on his NHL dreams and is headed to Eastern Europe to play in the KHL. He recently signed a contract with Admiral Vladivostok.

Timashov was a 125th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs but was never able to crack an NHL lineup.

He last played in North America during the 2021-22 season, playing for the Bridgeport Islanders.

For Timashov, this chapter in his life closes as he will apply for permanent citizenship in the Russian Federation.

While it seems like Timashov would have already had Russian citizenship, in this case, he has ties to both Ukraine (his mother) and Russia (his father). But the family moved to Sweden early in his life, and he's lived in Stockholm.

He's proven himself in international play at the 2016 IIHF Tournament, scoring 7 points (2-5) in seven games. After rising through the ranks of Swedish hockey, he'd soon find himself in pursuit of an NHL career, which has unfortunately failed.

Timashov would bounce around the league and play only 45 games in the NHL, the majority for the Maple Leafs (39), while playing only 5 for the Red Wings. He'd score 9 points (4-5).

Since he's left the NHL, he's bounced around Europe playing in Sweden, Switzerland (Swiss-A), the KHL once already with HC Sochi, and will be rejoining the league in 2025.

It's a sad story to see a chapter end like this, but for Timashov, he's found his true home in Europe.
