General manager Steve Yzerman opens press conference with shots at Dylan Larkin
The
Detroit Red Wings were unable to make the playoffs this season. Even with the help of Todd McLellan, who turned them into a better team, they were unable to pass the Montreal Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets, and others in the wild-card standings.
The result? Dylan Larkin would verbalize his frustration, criticizing GM Steve Yzerman for his lack of meaningful moves during the trade deadline.
Instead of utilizing the cap space available and draft assets to their benefit, Yzerman sat on his hands. He'd bring in veterans like
Craig Smith and
Petr Mrazek.
This is what happened instead of luring any top-six talent to
Hockeytown. Which, honestly, we get it--it's frustrating seeing Yzerman do nothing and then leave LCA blameless.
«We didn't do anything and I felt the group - we didn't gain any momentum from the trade deadline and guys were kind of down about it"
Now, the tables have turned as he'd talk about their lack of moves, and would instead re-frame the conversation about the Canadiens' best player, taking them to the playoffs, which is an obvious jab at Larkin.
According to Yzerman, there were "good options" available to spend assets on. Another justification for his inaction in March.
That is a complete cop-out, and then he used the Montreal Canadiens as a cudgel against Larkin.
While not all of them are top-six material, they offer depth goal-scoring, something the Red Wings sorely lack at the moment.
All five are now on playoff teams and fighting for the postseason, while the Red Wings are stagnating.
