Hockey community baffled after Original Six team releases new jersey pricing
NHL fans are getting priced out of their favorite sports team's merchandise, with today's Fanatics release of the Detroit Red Wings Centennial Celebration jersey, which will be available for a whopping price.
NHL fans are increasingly getting priced out of their favorite sport.
Not only has Fanatics gained a foothold in the NHL in the late 2010s with the "breakaway" jerseys.
During the 2024-25 season, they became the manufacturer of the NHL's jerseys after the Adidas contract ended.
There's nothing fans love more than to wear their team's colors and crest in the arena while cheering on their favorite players.
But with Fanatics' increased prices, it seems like they'll have to shift expectations in order to
their new jersey.
More than likely, it will be a step down from the authentic pro, as an "authentic" premium jersey's price point is $229.99 USD on the Fanatics
website.
For some working-class families, that's a phone bill or a car payment.
This isn't even comparable to what you'd pay in-house at Little Caesars Arena.
Fans are angry, and rightly so.
The Fanatics-Era In the NHL Has Begun and It's Affected Detroit Red Wings fans
While these jerseys have been designed to memorialize the team's lineage to the Detroit Red Wings as we know them today, the price point isn't.
For the longest time, fans have had the on-ice quality
jerseys gatekept through nebulous shops, online stores, groups, and MeiGray.
Now, to even think of purchasing a jersey could break the bank for some folks.
It's a trend we see too often in consumer pricing, where people have become the product.
But we'll never see relief from Fanatics and Adidas.
This practice is heinous, and it should end.
