Detroit Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine stepped into the net for Team USA during a tense match at the World Championship on Monday.

Augustine took over from former Wings player Alex Nedeljkovic midway through the game, with Slovakia holding a 4-1 lead. Despite facing a tough situation, Augustine managed to make eight saves on nine shots, as Team USA made comeback in the third period. However, their efforts fell short as Slovakia ultimately won a 5-4 overtime victory at Ostrava Arena in Ostrava, Czechia.
The U.S. team inlcude other Red Wings players, including goaltender Alex Lyon and defenseman Jeff Petry, with Derek Lalonde and Alex Westlund serving on the coaching side. The tournament has been a mixed bag for the Americans so far, with one win, one overtime loss, and one shootout loss, and a total of four points. Their goal differential of 12-11 currently places them fourth in Group B, just above the threshold for advancing to the elimination round. Milos Kelemen sealed the victory for Slovakia during three-on-three play, deflecting Simon Nemec's shot past Augustine in overtime.
Augustine, a native of South Lyon, Michigan, and product of Michigan State University, was drafted 41st overall in 2023 by Detroit. This marks the 19-year-old's debut appearance at the men's Worlds. In his previous game against Germany, Augustine relieved Lyon and made 11 saves on 12 shots during the 6-1 win. Across his two appearances, Augustine has maintained a solid 1.67 goals-against average and .905 save percentage. His performance at Michigan State was also impressive, with a 2.96 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 35 games, including three shutouts that helped the Spartans to make their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2012.
Team USA will have a break until their next game Thursday where they will face team France in their next preliminary game. With matchups against Poland, Kazakhstan, and Latvia, the U.S. needs to secure their spot among the top four teams in Group B. Despite their challenging start, including a loss to Sweden in the opener and Monday's really closed matchup, the team remains optimistic about their players moving forward.
