It looks like Detroit Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon, who is on an expiring contract, could be nearing his final days with the organization.
This was not how the Detroit Red Wings envisioned their critical night against the divisional foe Ottawa Senators going.
Not only did they fail to convert on a whopping 5 chances on the power play in the 1st period alone, but they also quickly fell behind 2-0 as the Senators beat goalie Alex Lyon twice on their 1st 3 shots of the game.
While Lyon didn't exactly help out his team by making saves, the team defense wasn't up to par either.
Ottawa's 1st goal of the game was scored after they converted on a 4-on-2 opportunity, followed by a Tim Stutzle goal from an extreme angle; Lyon's night was soon over as he was yanked in favor of Cam Talbot.
Ottawa then took advantage of a turnover by Detroit in the neutral zone to make it 3-0 on a breakaway from ex-Wing David Perron.
The Senators later capitalized on a brutal turnover from Detroit's Dominik Shine in the 3rd period, making the score 4-1.
That may be the most outnumbered rush situations I've seen this year from our team. The first goal was four-on-two. There were multiple two-on-ones. There were short breakaways where the D was just getting walked from the tops of the circles in way too much. And until we learn to take that (stuff) out of our game, we're going to need six a night, and that can't happen.
Meanwhile, Lyon's future with the Red Wings remains up in the air. He's on an expiring contract as opposed to both Cam Talbot and Petr Mrazek, who are signed through 2026.
The Red Wings also have Sebastian Cossa waiting in the prospect pipeline, and it's expected that he'll make a case to join the team in Training Camp in the fall.
