A top former beat writer for the Detroit Red Wings has confirmed that the organization feels that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is biased against them.
While it's typically regarded as a popular refrain that sports fans sometimes use to cope in the face of losing, the Detroit Red Wings apparently feel that they have a legitimate beef with the NHL being biased against them.
Former Red Wings beat writer Keith Gave, who covered the team for years and also played an instrumental role in Sergei Fedorov's defection from the former Soviet Union to the United States, indicated that the top figures in the Red Wings' organization feel slighted by NHL Commissioner
Gary Bettman.
That's Gary Bettman's NHL. For reasons only he can explain, he's got it out for Detroit. That's the belief at the highest level of the franchise. No one knows why, but they really don't like it.
Gave was responding to an X user's comment flashing back to 2020 NHL Entry Draft in which the Red Wings astonishingly fell back to 4th in the Draft Lottery despite having the worst overall record in the NHL by a wide margin; the top overall pick, forward Alexis Lafreniere, was selected by the New York Rangers - who had made the playoffs.
Gave continued when asked why the NHL would have a bias against a historic and popular Original 6 club like the Red Wings that generates plenty of revenue:
That's the million-dollar question. The Wings carried this league on their shoulders through the period of unprecedented expansion starting in the early 1990s. How many times a season were they on national TV? Now treated like lepers among the governors.
Red Wings fans, do you believe that the NHL and commissioner Gary Bettman in particular have a bias against Detroit?
