It's one thing to lose a game, but it's a completely different thing to set some embarrassing new team records in the process.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were bested in last night's game against the Carolina Hurricanes; the final score was 6-3. Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal scored his 4th career hat trick.
But a pair of Maple Leafs star forwards set a dubious record in the process that hadn't been seen by any Leafs player since 1991.
Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner were a combined -12 on the night, nothing short of a stunning statistic. They became the first Leafs players with identical -6 finishes since Daniel Marois and Mike Bullard did so against the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991.
As a whole, the Leafs' top line of Matthew, Marner and Matthew Knies finished a combined -17. That's the first time that a line has finished with that mark since Ilya Kovalchuk, Dany Heatley and Patrik Stefan of the Atlanta Thrashers against the Ottawa Senators in January of 2003.
As Matthews said later on, that's just the way it goes sometimes.
The Maple Leafs named Matthews their captain during the offseason, further fueling speculation that John Tavares could soon be on the move.
