Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond and head coach Todd McLellan recently discussed an underlying issue that has contributed to their recent losses.

During interview with The Athletic, two members of the Red Wings addressed their true thoughts on the team's recent struggles.
Following their Friday's 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers, Raymond broke his silence.
«You've got to bear down on the chances you get,» Lucas Raymond said. «Tonight I think we had plenty of chances to score one, two, on a good night, three. But we didn't. And that's what matters, and we need to adjust it and get better moving forward.»

Raymond believes that the Red Wings must get inside more, including grittier areas, such as the crease.
«We're not getting to those dirty areas right now where a lot of the goals are scored,» Raymond said. «We talked about it after the Vegas game, we knew it coming into this game, and it's easy when it's not going in (to) start looking for it even more. For us right now, it's just about keeping it simple, getting back to it. We know we can score goals. We've got a lot of guys in this room that can score goals. So it's just about trusting that.»

Simple hockey: The Red Wings are overcomplicating things

As per Todd McLellan himself, the Red Wings are looking upside down.
Straight-forward hockey is one niche the Red Wings may want to study, as it worked very well earlier on into this 2025-26 NHL season.
«I think we're upside down,» he said. «And what does that mean? I think we start from all around the net, and then get there. And I believe we should be going to the net first with the puck. We want to make all these plays, we got this and we got that, and you know, sometimes it's great and the goalie makes a save and you feel good about your power play. But overall, I go back to some of our power plays in San Jose - the simplicity of creating a shooting opportunity, taking advantage of it, and then jumping on them right after.

«We do it differently. We want to make eight passes and spring somebody open for a Grade-A chance, and if it works, great. If not, well then we've got to go do it all over again. We're upside down a little bit. We'll fix it.»
