The Detroit Red Wings organization will have a tough choice to make regarding one of their best players in the coming years.
Steve Yzerman, general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, has built an impressive group of young players that will bring success to the franchise for many years.
He didn't only bring young talent to the team; he also signed several great veterans that can lead the team, such as
Alex DeBrincat and
Patrick Kane.
The two former Chicago Blackhawks players haven't committed long-term to the team, but DeBrincat signed for four years, whereas Kane has been remaining in Detroit on a string of one-year deals.
This season, the two players are leading the team in points, showing the massive impact they have in Detroit.
Detroit Red Wings Should Sign Patrick Kane To Longer Contract, Per New Report
After four games, the first overall pick in 2007 tallied five points, including two goals.
Now, a report suggested that the Wings should consider offering Kane a multi-year extension.
He hasn't shown signs of slowing down yet, and even if he ends up signing a short multi-year extension, it could end up being a smart decision for the Wings.
Averaging a point per game at that age is impressive, and nothing indicates he won't be able to maintain that rhythm all season long.
Of course, Kane earned the right to decide what he wants to do and for how long he wants to do it.
At this stage of his career, there's no denying the player is pursuing another Stanley Cup, and at some point, he could end up choosing to join a top contender if the Wings don't get to the next level, like we're currently seeing with
Sidney Crosby.
But the Wings' chances of winning would be drastically higher with Kane on board, meaning Steve Yzerman should do all he can to sign him for two or three more years, according to the same report.
In spite of his exhaustive injury history, Kane is still an elite player who can produce and contribute.
