A recent column by The Athletic has highlighted each NHL team's takeaway early into the regular season, and it highlights just how good of a job Steve Yzerman has done working on this roster over the past several years.

This is single-handedly saving his job as general manager.
Steve Yzerman may face plenty of criticism due to the organizations lack of playoff appearences throughout his tenure as Red Wings general manager, but the best has surely yet to come.
A recent column by The Athletic has highlighted the true meaning of trusting the process, showing just how crucial Yzerman's drafting skills as general manager have been.
"It feels strange to say about a team that's been rebuilding as long as the Red Wings, but this is a younger Detroit team than we've seen in past seasons, with three rookies making the team out of camp. Importantly, though, they've already contributed. Forward Emmitt Finnie has a pair of assists through the first five games and has been a key forechecker on the top line. Defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka has been playing north of 20 minutes a night in the top four. And winger Michael Brandsegg-Nygård has brought needed physicality to the lineup. They've played a role in Detroit's hot start. - Max Bultman"

The best has yet to come for the Detroit Red Wings

Many didn't expect three NHL rookies who have yet to lace the skates up in a regular season game to make the opening night roster, but since then, they've all proved their worth.
Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Emmitt Finnie, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard have all played key roles in the Red Wings' early success in the 2025-26 NHL season, which sees Detroit on top of the Atlantic division with a 4-1-0 record.
With these prospects newly learning what it's like to take on the big stage at the NHL level, the ceiling is sky-high from here on out, and Red Wings fans are in for a treat.
