The Red Wings are attempting to win their 4th-straight game, but have made a notable lineup change for tonight's matchup against the Oilers.
The
Detroit Red Wings have won 3-straight games at Little Caesars Arena, victories over the divisional foes Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning followed by another win over the Los Angeles Kings.
Goaltender Cam Talbot was in the Detroit crease each of the wins, but he'll be taking a seat tonight against his former Edmonton Oilers teammates.
The Red Wings, who are now led by former Oilers head coach Todd McLellan, has decided to give the start to goaltender
Alex Lyon; he's making his 1st start since January 21 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
While the Red Wings have generally ridden the hot hand in terms of their goaltending this year, they also don't want to overwork the 37 year old Talbot, who has played in the NHL now for 2 decades.
So far this year, Lyon is 8-6-1 with a 2.68 GAA and .908 SV%.
Alex Lyon is in the final year of his contract with the Red Wings
Lyon, who has played with the Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers before joining the Red Wings in 2023, is in the last year of his current deal with Detroit.
Lyon's status with the Red Wings for next year hasn't been decided. While Cam Talbot is under contract for another year, Lyon has the chance to become an unrestricted free agent.
It's likely that the Red Wings are going to be moving on from one or potentially even both of Lyon and teammate
Ville Husso, who is also in the last year of his deal; Detroit has young
Sebastian Cossa waiting in the wings in the American Hockey League, and he could earn a roster spot for next year.
