Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has gotten involved in a trade this afternoon between the divisional foe Tampa Bay Lightning and the Seattle Kraken, and they're getting another draft selection out of it.
What are the major parts of the deal? The Lightning are picking up both Yanni Gourde and Oliver Bjorkstrand from the Kraken as well as a 2026 5th round pick and prospect Kyle Aucoin; the Kraken are retaining 50% of Gourde's salary.
In return, the Lightning sent Mikey Eyssimont, their 1st round picks in 2026 and 2027, and a 2025 2nd round pick (originally belonging to the Toronto Maple Leafs) to the Kraken.
The Red Wings got involved by retaining 25% of Gourde's salary, meaning they'll be getting a 2025 4th round Draft pick in return, and it will be the higher selection that belonged to the Lightning or Edmonton Oilers.
The Red Wings, who have now lost 3 straight games in regulation for the 1st time under coach Todd McLellan, have been leapfrogged in the standings by both the Columbus Blue Jackets and the New York Rangers for the final pair of Wild Card spots in the playoff race.
They're also going to be without Andrew Copp the rest of the year after he underwent pectoral surgery, leading many fans to express hope that Yzerman will be exploring a trade to supplement for his absence.
The Trade Deadline is March 7 at 3:00 PM (Eastern Standard Time).
