Red Wings officially complete two-player move and a standout stud joins the lineup against Toronto

Ahead of the game tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Detroit Red Wings have activated standout stud James Van Riemsdyk from the non-roster and sent Erik Gustafsson to the AHL.
The Detroit Red Wings will compete against the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight in a continuation of the series between the two Original Six teams.
Joining the roster today will be 1,000-game NHL veteran and former 1st-round pick James Van Riemsdyk.
He will be joining another 1st-round pick in the lineup, Patrick Kane, as the Red Wings face off against the Maple Leafs tonight at 7 P.M. in Little Caesars Arena.
The team will need all the help it can get, and with the 36-point veteran joining the ranks, he'll be another secondary-scoring option Todd McLellan can utilize.
James Van Riemsdyk's 2025-26: Fits and Starts
James Van Riemsdyk missed training camp as he was staying home to support his wife during her pregnancy. We wouldn't see JVR suit up for the Red Wings until nearly two weeks after the announcement of his children's birth, in Minnesota.
Now, after practicing and getting enough reps in to satisfy McLellan, he will draw into the lineup tonight, after a dismal loss to the Montreal Canadiens at home on opening night, 5-1.

We'll have to be patient to see what kind of role he'll truly play tonight against Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
