The Detroit Red Wings' playoff hopes have been altered as an Atlantic Division rival announced long-term injury news to their star player and team captain.

Last season, the two wild card playoff spots were won by Atlantic Division teams, with the Detroit Red Wings missing the playoffs by only five points.
The Ottawa Senators and the Montreal Canadiens clinched the spots at the final moments of the regular season, and now, a new development suggests the Detroit Red Wings could be in a better position than they were last year to make it.
Indeed, after the Florida Panthers announced long-term injuries to two key players in Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov before the start of the season, the Ottawa Senators announced that their best player will also be forced to miss several games due to an injury.

Senators Announce Injury To Top Player; The Red Wings Need To Capitalize

Yesterday, the Ottawa Senators head coach Travis Green confirmed that the team captain Brady Tkachuk would miss four weeks or more due to a hand injury.
Here's what he said:
"He's going to miss a significant amount of time. We'll know more in the next 24 hours. We don't know exactly, but it's four weeks plus. We don't know exactly."

"It's unfortunate. You don't want to lose a player, and you don't want to lose a player of his stature. We're not going to dwell on it. It's just like when anyone else gets hurt, we're going to move on quickly."

"Brady will be around our team and will be the captain that he is, but he won't be playing."
With the Sens captain sidelined for at least a month, it'll be interesting to see how the team fares on the ice.
He's obviously an important player in Ottawa, and his absence could end up hurting the team.
For the Red Wings, this is a great opportunity.
We saw last year that a handful of games can make the difference in making the playoffs or not.
If the Wings can take some points away from the Senators during the captain's recovery, it could make a difference in the end.
