Steve Yzerman has revealed trades are still in the works and one forward's done in Detroit
NHL Insider Bob Woodward dug deeper into Steve Yzerman's plans for the Red Wings, as there appears to be more trades on the way, could Andrew Copp be one of them?
The Detroit Red Wings shouldn't be done making moves yet. They've made some moves, albeit not great ones in our opinion.
Signing
Mason Appleton and giving
James Van Riemsdyk ($1 million, 1-year) another year in the NHL as bottom-six forwards was a generous thing for Yzerman to do, but should he have?
Though we can't exactly complain about the
Jacob Bernard-Docker ($875K, 1-year) signing, there were some defensemen who were better options available, like
K'Andre Miller, who signed with the Canes.
Now, as free agency marches on, you have to wonder who will be next to be signed or traded by Yzerman.
Copp might be an easy sell for a contending team that needs a depth, 3rd-line center. His declining production has been an issue in Detroit, and he could benefit from being moved from the Wings in order to sign an NHLer for the role or promote a prospect from the AHL.
But in order to get a decent return, what would Yzerman ideally have to do?
«Copp has a 10-team no-trade list and his $5.625 million cap hit is a lot for what he's currently bringing in on-ice value, so Yzerman could look to retain a lot of money here to maximize the return and aim to get something similar to what Philadelphia did for
Scott Laughton (a first-round pick). «
This season in 56 games with the Red Wings,
Copp scored 23 points (10-13) in a disappointing outing after he was believed to be a capable top-six winger in New York.
At $5.625 million AAV, the team needs more, and may have to retain salary in order to move him. Something Yzerman should consider doing if he has a chance.
