Detroit Red Wings' general manager, Steve Yzerman, has just completed a very under-the-radar signing, as he has officially acquired one of the NHL's most underrated blueliners.

The Detroit Red Wings sign Travis Hamonic to a one-year, $1 million contract

The signing of this veteran defenseman comes with a low risk, high-reward scenario, as this 34-year-old has proven his value over his 900 NHL games endured.
Within his professional career thus far, Hamonic has been known as a defensive defenseman who's incredible at blocking shots and serves in a shutdown role.
And new insight has shown just how genius Steve Yzerman is for this acquisition.

Report reveals just how impactful Travis Hamonic is expected to be in the Detroit Red Wings' lineup

While Hamonic is known for his overall skill and depth, he is undoubtedly underrated.
This vet's career began in the 2010/11 NHL season with the New York Islanders, and he has accumulated 900 NHL games under his belt since.
Within these 900 games, Hamonic has recorded 53 goals and 189 assists, totalling 242 points.
While these numbers are worth appreciating, another report reveals some additional intriguing news regarding this veteran's performance.
Take a look from a stat line from this past season:
«Season's not over yet, but Travis Hamonic has been on the ice for 13 Senators goal at 5v5 in 838 minutes.

That's 0.93 on-ice goals per 60.

That would be the lowest mark for any defenceman ever recorded since we have data in 2007-08.»
GM Yzerman deserves a pat on the back for this acquisition, due to the fact that not only will this increase the organization's defensive depth, but it suggests a step forward in the Red Wings' current rebuild for a low cost of $1M.
