This clear mistake by the Anaheim Ducks ultimately ended trade talks involving Mason McTavish
The Anaheim Ducks reportedly wanted too much in return from the Red Wings for Mason McTavish, meaning that he won't be going to Detroit in a trade.
The Red Wings have been linked to Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish, who the Ducks have yet to sign to a new contract.
Now, it looks like McTavish is no longer available to be acquired because they reportedly
wanted the Red Wings to give them defensive prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka in return.
Translation: McTavish is no longer available for trade. Quite the strategy for the Ducks to just target each team's most valuable asset as it was reported they wanted Axel Sandin Pellikka.
Sandin-Pellikka is far too valuable an asset for Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman to give up so easily, even for the promise of McTavish scoring at least 50 points for them.
Despite the friendship between Yzerman and Ducks GM Pat Verbeek, the Ducks will have to make other arrangements if they want to get assets in return for McTavish from another team.
McTavish had 52 points (22G, 30A) in 76 games for the Ducks this year.
The Ducks still have not signed RFA forward Mason McTavish
McTavish is said to be looking for a longer-term deal with the Ducks, while Verbeek has openly said that his philosophical approach is more in line with
giving bridge contracts.
Part of my philosophy is I like to do bridge deals with players. It allows the players two things. It allows them to have no pressure to grow and get better before they have the long-term contract. It also allows the team to assess them over the three years of how good they are really going to be.
McTavish has 140 points (60G, 80A) in 229 career NHL games.
