The Detroit Red Wings organization has reportedly acquired its next Henrik Zetterberg.
With Eddie Genborg heading to Timrå IK, the parallels to one of the greatest captains in Red Wings history are already beginning. Zetterberg came out of Timrå and ended up having a Hall of Fame-worthy career in Detroit.
He opened up on his decision in an interview:
"Yeah, I've signed for two years with Timrå now in the SHL. So I hope to play as much in the SHL as I can."
It doesn't hurt that Zetterberg is still connected to the Swedish club and actively supporting Genborg's growth.
In the same interview, the player recalled his phone conversation with the Wings legend:
"Yeah, I've talked with him a lot on the phone, and, yeah, he's a really good guy. And, yeah, I think I can get some help from him. So that's really good."
Genborg is already promising. He started the last season in the Juniors, but after scoring 34 points in 28 games, he was promoted to the adults' division, where he added two goals in 28 more games, with a -1 plus/minus.
His physical style also adds a dimension Detroit fans will appreciate. He described himself as a power forward who enjoys agitating opponents.
"Well, I just try to stay close and hit them. They get irritated by that."
"Genborg loves to hit everyone in sight and that tenacious energy is going to take him far. He's more of a support player than a playdriver, but he still had a great start to the tournament with three points in his first two games.
He quieted down a bit, but I still think there's a ton of pro-level attributes there from the way he thinks the game and plays in transition. I like him as a third-rounder, but I know some scouts think he could go higher."
