GM Steve Yzerman has gotten the most value out of his sixth-round pick in 2023, Rudy Guimond. The 169th overall selection plays in the QMJHL for the Moncton Wildcats.
The Detroit Red Wings Prospect Rudy Guimond: An Elite Goaltender?
The Quebec-born goaltender has proven himself to be one of the best late draft picks by Yzerman by a mile.
While many are excited to see the arrival of Trey Augustine or Sebastian Cossa in the pipeline, you may not know enough about the surging Red Wings prospect Guimond:
Last season, he helped the team win the Gilles-Courteau Trophy in the QMJHL, with a record of 16-0-0, a 1.73 GAA, and a .940 save percentage during the regular season.
While he didn't look promising out of the USHL:
Late in the 2023 NHL Draft, the Red Wings selected a netminder out of the USHL in Rudy Guimond with their sixth round pick. Many didn't think much of the Pointe-Claire, Quebec native as he would go on to produce lackluster numbers with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, finishing with a 14-18-3 record and a 3.53 goals against average (GAA).
He has finally blossomed into the goalie prospect the Red Wings wanted to see , finishing the 2024-25 season with a record of 24-1-0 in the QMJHL.
Though his numbers have slipped in his second season in the league, he has a solid record of 10-3-1, a 2.39 GAA, and a .916 save percentage.
Guimond will complete the 2025-26 season with the Wildcats and will join the Harvard Crimson in 2026-27 as he makes another move to inch closer to his NHL dreams.
