Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLellan talked about his respect for goaltender Alex Lyon, who started for the 2nd time in 24 hours after Cam Talbot couldn't go.
The Detroit Red Wings couldn't follow up their success against the Utah Hockey Club, falling 5-2 to the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night for their 10th loss in their last 13 games.
Goaltender Cam Talbot was scheduled to make the start for Detroit but was ultimately unable to. Instead, Lyon had to play for the 2nd time in less than 24 hours; he replaced
Petr Mrazek,
who was hurt in the 1st two minutes of Monday's game in Salt Lake City.
Following the loss, coach Todd McLellan
spoke at length about the "grind" that playoff-bubble teams like the Red Wings are enduring along with the unexpected start of Lyon.
There's 800 players and probably 100 coaches in the league right now that understand that's the way it's going to be. But the ones that are lucky enough get to do it for another six weeks. And that's just how it is in the playoffs, too. So we're in it right now. We're battling for it. It's a grind. Part of growing up as a young player or a young team is dealing with it, and we're learning those lessons. And some nights we do it well and some nights we don't. So let's keep improving if we can.
McLellan sends a clear message to Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman
McLellan's comments on the team he's working with highlight the missed opportunity from Steve Yzerman's low-eventful NHL trade deadline. 'Part of growing up as a young team is dealing with it, we're learning those lessons'.
McLellan then discussed the "curveball" they were thrown as a club thanks to the unexpected nature of Talbot's unavailability.
By the time we all got out of bed and began our meetings and treatments for the day, he wasn't able to go. Sometimes you're thrown a curveball.
The Red Wings remain 3 points out of the final Wild Card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They return to Little Caesars Arena on Thursday for the 1st of what will be back to back games against divisional foes.
First, they'll battle the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night before facing the Boston Bruins 48 hours later on Thursday night.
