John Gibson was acquired by the Detroit Red Wings this offseason, as Steve Yzerman sent Petr Mrazek to the West Coast, in the hopes he could help end the playoff drought.

The Detroit Red Wings traded for veteran goalie John Gibson of the Anaheim Ducks on day 2 of the NHL Draft. The team would send Petr Mrazek and two draft picks back in return to the Ducks.
For the Red Wings, it is going to put them back in win-now territory (we hope).
While the Ducks have recaptured $2.5 million in cap space, and have given Lukas Dostal the #1 position in the crease. The Ducks would receive Mrazek, a 33-year-old backup who has a career (180-176-40), and a (906 SV%).
The veteran provided solid backup goaltending in Detroit. But ultimately, the Red Wings hope the acquisition of Gibson will be one piece in the puzzle that rids them of their playoff drought, going on nine years now.
If so, it'll be an absolute home run of a trade completed for Steve Yzerman.

John Gibson's First Year in Detroit, What Should We Hope To See?

Gibson will enter his 13th year in the NHL, age 31, and was an all-time leader in Anaheim with starts (506) and saves (14,034), including minutes (28,038). While his career behind a terrible Anaheim team is nothing to sneeze at:
His career stats-204-217-63, 2.89 GAA, .910 SV%, 24 shutouts-include elite peaks: a .926 SV% in 2017-18, two top-10 Vezina finishes, and the 2016 William M. Jennings Trophy shared with Frederik Andersen.

For the Red Wings to recover lost ground, and for Gibson to be the starter they need him to be, he'll have to have 30+ starts, a 915 SV%, and 35 wins. That is, with a solid core of Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin on offense, and Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson on the defense in front of him, the team should be better.
Gibson should provide not only a competitive edge for the team, but a bridge to the future in Sebastian Cossa.
For this to happen, the veteran goalie will have to recapture his 2017-19 form, with a top-5 GSAx.
The Red Wings will have to improve their .890 team SV% from last season to even consider themselves contenders this season, and with Gibson's help, it'll be a reality.
