Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings have missed out on a former 1st-overall pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, as he was sent to the Western Conference in a trade today.

The Chicago Blackhawks completed a trade today that sent a promising young winger to the Western Conference.
The trade sent forward Lukas Reichel to the Vancouver Canucks in return for a 4th-round pick in the 2027 NHL draft.
The return for Reichel wasn't expected to be hugely rewarding, as the former 1st-round pick struggled throughout his tenure in Chicago. But for Detroit, this would've been a perfect reclamation project for the Red Wings, who could use the manpower in the AHL as they continue to promote prospects into the NHL.
General Manager Patrik Allvin of the Vancouver Canucks:
"Lukas is an exciting young player and someone we feel can help improve our forward group," Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said. "He is a talented playmaker who can create scoring opportunities with his offensive ability. We like the way he moves on the ice and his overall work ethic and feel our coaching staff can help him become a better and more consistent hockey player."

Lukas Reichel Finds New Home In the NHL

Lukas Reichel had a tough time finding a home in the Chicago Blackhawks lineup despite the numerous chances he had. Kyle Davidson would exercise flexibility in judgment, sending him down to the AHL for stints in Rockford, but nothing would change until his last season with the Blackhawks, where he'd be on the same line as mentor Pat Maroon.
He'd find a way to put together a 70-game stint in the NHL and score 22 points (8-14) alongside his friend.
Despite that, he'd find himself as a healthy scratch in the league.
Now, as Kyle Davidson finds himself with more cap flexibility and assets to work with, the buy-in was cheap, but will the risk be worth it for the Canucks?
We'll find out soon enough.
He'll be joining Leon Draisaitl, Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider, Nico Sturm, Tim Stutzle, and Philip Grubauer on Team Germany in the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics.
Another case of sitting on the Yzerhands.
